Three Reasons Traveling For Prostate Cancer Treatment Is Not A Good Idea
There are many patients with prostate cancer that think about traveling for their prostate cancer treatment. Some will do it because they want to seek treatment from a specific doctor or others will do it because there are no treatment centers in their town. No matter why they do it, patients are traveling more often than ever before. However, traveling for prostate cancer treatment is not always a good idea. In fact, you might want to forget all about traveling during the treatment, even for pleasure. Take a look at these three reasons traveling out of town or out of state for treatment is not such a good idea.
Cost
The number one reason you might not want to travel out of town or out of state for prostate cancer treatment is because of the costs of traveling. Often times, if you choose to travel for treatment, you will not only have to pay traveling costs to get there and back, but also boarding costs. Most treatments will require that you stay in that general location for a while, so you will have to rent a home or hotel room if you don't know someone in the area to stay with. This can be quite expensive. If you have to stay for a month or two, it can be overwhelming. Unless you are a very unique patient that needs treatment only available in one area of the country, you might want to seek treatment near your own home.
Stress
Traveling away from your normal environment for prostate cancer treatment can be stressful. You may miss your family, friends, and normal routine. You may be more likely to get depressed from traveling away while you are ill. Sometimes the emotional support you can get just from being in your own community is enough to get you through the rough days of treatment. Without that support you may not do as well with your treatment. After all, studies show that emotional support and attitude have a lot to do with recovery potential.
Family
Along with stress, being away from your family during your treatment for prostate cancer can be unbearable. You really need to surround yourself with people who care about you and are supportive of you and your progress. When you remove yourself from your support system (your family) you will not likely feel the support you long for. Your family might not be keen on the idea of you going away from them to be treated either. They will worry more if you are gone and will likely want to be close to you in case you need them.
So, before you make plans to travel out of town or out of state for prostate cancer treatment, you need to be sure that you are certain you want to do it. If you do get involved in the treatment far away, it will be difficult for you to change your mind and return home. Once you are there and start treatment, you are basically stuck until the treatment is over.
